Top Mediator Approaches the $1
Billion Dollar Mark
 McCammon
Group Mediator and retired Richmond Circuit Judge
Robert Harris is shown here with Doug Landau at the
VTLA Annual Convention at The Homestead. Judge
Harris is approaching the $1 billion mark in the
total value of settlements he has handled, Judge Harris has been a mediator in some of the most
serious injury cases, including one of Mr. Landau's
head trauma and brain injury cases. That Fairfax
County car crash case was mediated in Richmond and
resulted in a settlement for Mr. Landau's young client
in excess of $2,000,000.00.
Mediation can be used in nearly every type of civil
dispute, including personal injury, product liability
and premises liability. Doug Landau agrees that
some form of Alternate Dispute Resolution ("ADR")
should be considered in every case. Mediation is one
form of ADR; Arbitration and Neutral Evaluation are
the other forms of dispute resolution that Landau has
utilized successfully in past cases. While ADR
does not resolve every single case, the experience
at Abrams Landau has been that the great majority
of cases do in fact settle during or after mediation
with a skilled Mediator like Judge Harris of the McCammon
Group.
It’s Time for Your Pre-season
Bike Check-up!
 With
the coming of warmer weather and longer days, The Athlete's
Lawyer Doug Landau recommends you get a pre-season check-up
-- for your bicycle! Just as important as making
certain your body is ready for intense training and racing,
is ensuring that you have a safe ride. Experienced
bicycle repair shops know what to look for and usually
have several strategies for each problem that arises. One
of the ways to avoid head injury and disabling bike crashes
is by letting the experts repair and maintain the bicycles
that you and your family members will use this season. Doug
is shown here with Sarah of A-1
Cycling. If you can find a bike shop and mechanics
who are experienced, talented and honest, then you will
have greater peace of mind, safety and success. Go

Having been a tennis instructor prior to law school, The
Athletes Lawyer enjoys including young and old in this
fun event. Shown here are the happy participants who did
not freeze like the early morning runners! Prior
to the start of the afternoon tournament, Landau and his
wife and oldest daughter ran in the cross country race
in 30 degree weather. Continuing his father’s tradition
of athletic involvement and success, Doug’s middle
daughter participated in horse back riding and skeet shooting. View

A wet dishcloth can be a one size fits all lid to cover
a fire in a pan. Watch this dramatic
video about how to deal with a common kitchen fire — oil
in a frying pan. It’s a real eye-opener!
At the Fire Fighting Training school they demonstrated
this with a deep fat fryer set on the fire field. An instructor
donned a fire suit and using an 8 oz cup at the end of
a 10 foot pole tossed water onto the grease fire. The results
got the attention of the students. The water, being heavier
than oil, sank to the bottom where it instantly became
superheated. The explosive force of the steam blew the
burning oil up and out. On the open field, it became a
thirty foot high fireball that resembled a nuclear blast.
Inside the confines of a kitchen, the fireball would hit
the ceiling and fill the entire room.
In addition, do not throw sugar or flour on a grease
fire. One cup creates the explosive force of two sticks
of dynamite. This is a powerful message—- watch
the video and pass it along to everyone you know. If
it saves one person or home from harm, then it is worth
distributing.
